What is the Required Energy Deficit per unit Weight Loss?

I fondly remember learning the 3,500 Calories to the pound ratio back in school.  This new study from the National Institutes of Health uses Kevin D. Hall's theory of initial body fat and changes in a person's weight during the weight-loss process.  It's apparently complicated and is only going to be used by health professionals, I look forward to seeing it come up in my practice soon.
