"One fry short of a Happy Meal." -- Rush Limbaugh

Well, the heat wave is over and I'm settling into another week, post-vacation (I miss you San Francisco), and I'm still holding my breath with the Pirates current record (it's only taken 18 years).  I was scrounging around the internet and reading my beloved Wall Street Journal, lo and behold this:

Under Pressure, McDonald's Adds Apples to Kids Meals

"The automatic inclusion of a quarter-cup of apples—without McDonald's customary caramel dipping sauce—and the dialed-back fries are the company's latest moves to fend off more regulation of what kids eat."

Happy Meal Comparison

Comparing the nutritional values of current and future Happy Meals containing four chicken nuggets and a child-sized cup of Coca-Cola:
Happy Meal with 2.4. oz. fries
  • Calories: 520
  • Total Fat: 23g (35%)*
  • Sodium: 570mg (24%)
  • Total Carbohydrates: 69g (23%)
  • Vitamin C: 10%
Happy Meal with apple slices and 1.1 oz. fries
  • Calories: 410
  • Total Fat: 17g (26%)
  • Sodium: 440mg (18%)
  • Total Carbohydrates: 58g (19%)
  • Vitamin C: 160%
* Percent of daily value for 2,000-calorie diet

The bottom line is this: parents still need to model healthy eating habits, but this is a step in the right direction.

Would you like fries with that?
